Somatic Movement Education Program

This program explores the richness of the relationship between body, mind, movement and touch in the context of our dynamic Embodied Anatomy and Embodied Developmental Movement approach to Somatic Movement Education. Students are introduced to the foundations and fundamentals of embodiment in working with themselves and others. This 500+ hour program requires two summers of study. All courses in Years 1 and 2 are required as well as related homework. Most courses in this program may also be taken individually, or in combination for personal growth or professional enrichment.

Certified Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering®/Somatic Movement Therapy Program

This program builds on the foundations of the Somatic Movement Education program. After completing all Year 1 and 2 courses and requirements in the Somatic Movement Education program, students move to more advanced skills in Years 3 and 4. Themes cover: deepening personal embodiment, achieving greater subtlety in touch and repatterning skills, integrating Embodied Anatomy and Embodied Developmental Movement, addressing psychophysical aspects of Somatic Movement Therapy, assessing clients, learning therapeutic approaches, exploring different applications of Body-Mind Centering®; and developing skills as a professional. This 1000+ hour program takes four summers to complete. All courses in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 are required as well as related homework.

Certified Teacher of Body-Mind Centering®

This program is open to Certified Practitioners and has two main areas of focus. One is on applying Body-Mind Centering® to groups, not just teaching the BMC material, but how its embodiment can form a basis for working with group dynamics, teaching, administration, and the teaching/learning environment. The second is a continuation of deepening one's personal embodiment. Embodiment is the key to sharing BMC. When everything else is stripped away, what you teach is yourself. By deeper embodiment, you lay the foundation for not just sharing the material, but for transmitting the essence of the work. Requirements of this program include being a teaching assistant in the practitioner program, attending the two teacher training courses and completing homework which includes documenting BMC teaching experience. Certified Teachers of Body-Mind Centering® are some of the most highly trained people in the somatic field.

Educational Process

The uniqueness of Body-Mind Centering® lies in the specificity with which each of the body systems can be personally embodied and integrated; the fundamental groundwork of developmental repatterning; the utilization of a body-based language to describe movement and body-mind relationships; and the almost unlimited number of areas of application of BMC.

The underlying educational process in studying this work involves the experiential embodiment of the material. It is this exploration of embodiment that makes the work transformative and allows us to deepen our appreciation of how we express who we are, how we perceive the world, others and ourselves, and how we learn. Classes are a combination of experiential and intellectual approaches. Classes are taught by Certified Teachers of Body-Mind Centering® and include movement, touch, voice, theory and discussion.

Core programs are designed for the person who already has experience in the fields of movement, dance, bodywork or body-mind disciplines.

International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA)

Our Core Programs are approved by the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association.
