This series explores External Respiration, and the structures of breathing. From our early beginnings in utero the development of internal respiration creates pathways throughout the body that guide and set the baseline for external respiration, when we exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the outer world.
Body-mind Centering® brings a new expanded awareness to the practice of breathing and pranayama, moving beyond a technical approach to an embodied awareness of respiration in its many forms.
EXTERNAL RESPIRATION, THE STRUCTURES OF BREATHING, AND THE UNIFIED DIAPHRAGM
LUNGS, UPPER & LOWER RESPIRATORY, DIAPHRAGMS (CRANIAL, MOUTH, NASAL,THROAT, SHOULDER, THORACIC, PELVIC), CRURA, SPINAL LIGAMENTS.
These are the structures of external respiration, that support the dynamic interplay of oxygenation and carbondioxination throughout the body, as well as the body and external environment. They are dependent on the integration of internal respiration in support of external respiration.
PRANAYAMA, ASANA, AND MEDITATION
Using our awareness of external respiration we will explore aspects of pranayama, asana, and meditation from an embodied approach. Each weekend will introduce a new aspect of breathing. Explorations will draw from embodied anatomy, embryology, neurocellular development, and principles of Body-Mind Centering® and yoga. As we become more conscious of our breath, we discover a more easeful, balanced, and nuanced exchange between ourselves and the world around us.
