Mechanics of Vocal Expression, by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Second Edition with new material. This book is an introduction to some of the basic structures and principles of the vocal mechanism. When embodied, these principles offer an exciting and dynamic process for unfolding our physical voice to express what we experience, feel, think and cherish. The book includes exercises and suggestions for how we can deepen our awareness of them.

The structures of the voice are explored in the three major attributes of phonation: pitch, intensity and vowel production. There is also a brief look at the function of consonants in setting the rhythm or boundaries of phonation, which offers recuperation to the vocalizing structures.

  • Section I – the oral and nasal cavities, their structure, and the consonants.
  • Section II – the larynx: its structure and function in registration (pitch, intensity and muscular balance/imbalance of the vocal cords).
  • Section III – the pharynx: its structure and function in resonation (overtones, vowel production, vowel scales, vowel color and the continuum of expression and communication).

The Lower Limbs, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Our skeletal system gives our body the basic form through which we locomote through space, act on the environment, and sculpt and create the energy forms in space that we call movement. Through embodying the skeletal system, the mind becomes structurally organized, providing the supporting ground for our thoughts, the leverage for ideas, and the fulcrums or spaces between our ideas for the articulation and understanding of their relationships. Embodiment of the skeletal system provides the foundation for the psychophysical qualities of clarity, effortlessness and form. ax

DVD SET • Four discs; 7 hours, 12 min.

The Organ System, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Our organs are vital and alive. They provide us with our sense of self, full-bodiedness, and organic authenticity. Organs are the primary habitats or natural environments of our emotions, aspirations, and the memories of our inner reactions to our personal histories. They support our tone and our feelings, and give volume to our movement.

Embodying the organ system with sections on: explorations of the organs; releasing adhesions between organs; initiating breath, voice, movement and touch from the organs; analyzing imbalances in individual organs; techniques to balance the organs; and the embryological development of the organs. DVD SET • Five discs; 7 hours, 50 min.

The Endocrine System, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

The endocrine glands create crystalline psychophysical states through which we are able to experience and understand the universal aspect of self. This is the system of internal stillness, surges of chaos/balance and the crystallization of energy into archetypal experiences. The endocrine glands underlie intuition and the perceiving and understanding of Universal Mind.

Embodying the endocrine system with material on: initiating breath, voice, movement and touch from the glands; relationship of the glands to the skeletal structures, reflex points and spinal energy centers; and techniques for integrating and balancing the gland. Covers the perineal body, coccygeal body, gonads, adrenals, pancreas, thoracobody, heart body, thymus, thyroid, parathyroids, carotid bodies, pineal, mamillary bodies and pituitary. DVD SET • Seven discs; 10 hours, 8 min.

The Nervous System, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Experience first occurs on the cellular level. The nervous system records the experience and organizes it into patterns. It can then call forth the experience and modify the pattern by integrating it with the patterns of other experiences. The nervous system is the last to know, but once knowing, becomes a primary controlling system of the body.

The nervous system is the last to know, but once knowing, becomes a primary controlling system of the body.  Embodying the nervous system with sections on: the somatic nervous system; the autonomic nervous system; sitting in the synapase, nerve reversal and healing; front, middle, and back bodies; releasing the brachial plexus and lumbosacral plexes; and embryology of the nervous system. DVD SET • Three discs; 4 hours, 46 min.

The Fluid System, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

The fluids of the body underlie presence and transformation, set the ground for basic communication, and mediate the dynamics of flow between rest and activity. Each fluid relates to a different quality of movement, touch, voice, and state of mind. These relationships can be approached from the aspects of movement, consciousness, and from anatomical and physiological functioning.

Embodying the Fluid System with sections on: cellular fluid, transitional fluid, extracellular fluid; fluid - membrane balance; blood; cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); synovial fluid; periorgan fluid; lymph; interstitial and cellular fluids; bone marrow; exploring the immune system through the fluids; fascia; fat; and ground fluid. The Ligamentous System, with Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Ligaments set the boundaries of movement between the bones. They coordinate and guide muscular responses by directing the paths of movement between the bones and provide specificity, clarity, and efficiency for the alignment and movement of the bones. Actively engaged ligaments underlie specific and effortless movement of joints. Ligaments support the psychophysical quality of detailed specificity.

Embodying the ligamentous system with sections on: explorations of the ligaments; finding the spiraling action of ligaments; ligaments of the hands, forearms, and elbows; ligaments of the shoulders and shoulder girdles; ligaments of the ribs and spine; ligaments of the pelvis and hips; ligaments of the knees, forelegs, and feet; differentiating flesh and bone; and the embryological development of the ligaments. NEW Only the Child Knows

The first year of life from the perspective of Body-Mind Centering® (BMCsm) With Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Early experiences in life create the foundations for kinesthetic, emotional and academic learning. Babies have a direct way to affect us, to let us know what they need and to inspire us to see things differently. We can learn from them. This perspective is at the center of the work with babies.

Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, the founder of BMC, who is featured in this video, is a pioneer of Somatic Education and a visionary in the field of care. She extensively researched early development and embryology, and put it together into an approach, which is informative and transformative. It asks the educator to explore their own development in movement, touch and vocal expression, to be able to attune to babies and their families, and to facilitate the developmental process in a gentle, non-intrusive way.

The video was filmed during the professional training for Infant Developmental Movement Education (IDME) at Atelier de Paris-Carolyn Carlson 2013.

Subtitles in French and Italian
